What Dogs Think (EP 39)

Dog commands

The Invisible Fence Line (Respecting Boundaries That Only Dogs Understand)

Tall Ones often say things like: “Why won’t you go on the grass?” or “Why are you stopping right there?” They do not realize dogs operate under complex territorial treaties and invisible boundary laws that are not written down but universally enforced.

Phase 1 — Lawn Perimeter Protocol
Many dogs define strict property borders. Tall Ones see flat grass. Dogs see:
✔ scent borders
✔ neighbor treaties
✔ squirrel transit lanes
✔ mail carrier stand-off zones
Crossing the line without authorization could cause diplomatic incidents.

Phase 2 — Sidewalk Sovereignty
Sidewalks serve as international neutral zones where all species may sniff, pee, and gossip without violating territorial accords. Stepping off sidewalk may require paperwork (sniffing first, then peeing second).

Phase 3 — No-Go Areas
Dogs will refuse access to certain areas for reasons Tall Ones cannot perceive:
• haunted patch of carpet
• cursed hallway corner
• evil bathroom tile
• lawn sprinkler danger sector
Tall Ones ask “What’s wrong?” Dog cannot explain. Supernatural matters are above human clearance level.

Phase 4 — Fence Negotiations
Outdoor fences create bark-to-bark diplomacy between dogs. Though separated physically, dogs exchange important messages:
“Who are you?”
“What are your beliefs?”
“Do you also oppose mail trucks?”
These alliances are sacred and enforced through mutual barking.

🐾 Breeds Who Excel at This

  • Shibas:Respect borders and their own superiority
    • Border Collies: Enforce boundaries like security guards
    • Shepherds: Patrol borders as if paid a salary
    • Dachshunds: Challenge borders despite inconvenient legs
    • Huskies: Ignore borders entirely, support anarchy

🧠 Science Says:

Dogs define spatial boundaries using scent, habit, and previous reinforcement. Humans see geography. Dogs see rules of civilization.
